Sterilization Process For Horsehair Brushes and Hog Bristles

Horsehair Sterilization

The horsehair that Gordon Brush Mfg. Co., Inc. uses is dressed, which means cleaned, sterilized, combed, and bundled. The dressing procedure requires sterilization at origin by boiling or by steam at a minimum of 100 degrees centigrade for no less than two hours.

This horse hair is imported from China or South America to Mexico for further processing including sterilization, combing, mixing, trimming, bundling, and packaging. As part of the processing procedure, the horse hair is sterilized by use of steam in an autoclave for a minimum of 125 degrees centigrade for not less than 45 minutes and meets or exceeds all of the sterilization requirements of the United States Department of Agriculture for the manufacture of Brushes. There are no other animal derived components mixed with the horse hair. It is then brought into the United States with a certificate of origin and a veterinary certificate certifying inspection and testing as well as sterilization by steam or boiling and that it originated from a safe and non-epidemic region having been tested with no evidence of BSE/TSE found.
